If you’re looking for a burger that’s bursting with flavor and easy to make, look no further than the grilled onion cheddar burger. This recipe is a copycat of the McDonald’s classic, and it’s a tried and true favorite for good reason. It’s juicy, cheesy, and perfect for a summer cookout or a quick and easy weeknight dinner.
Serve this with a strawberry oreo milkshake and French fries for a fun and delicious dinner meal!
INGREDIENTS YOU’LL NEED
Ground Beef – You’ll need 80/20 ground chuck. This is the best kind of meat for a thick and juicy burger, and it will ensure that your patty stays moist and tender on the grill.
Cheddar Cheese – Although I highly recommend cheddar cheese slices, feel free to use American yellow cheese instead.
Onions – Any type of onion will work but I recommend Vidalia, yellow, or white onions.
Salt and Pepper – Without salt and pepper your burger won’t taste like much. You’ll need it to season the burger patties.
HOW TO MAKE THIS DELICIOUS GRILLED ONION CHEDDAR BURGER
- Begin by caramelizing your onions. To caramelize onions, thinly slice sweet onions like Vidalia and cook over medium heat with butter or oil for 20-30 minutes until golden brown and sweet. Stir occasionally and add a pinch of salt to enhance the flavor.
- Form hamburger patties with ground beef into 1/2-inch thick patties. Make an indentation in the center and season with salt and pepper.
- Cook hamburger patties on a preheated grill or skillet over medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes per side or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F. Add the cheese once you flip the patties over and don’t press down on the patty.
- Serve the beef patties on warm hamburger buns with caramelized onions and the toppings of your choice!
TOP TIPS
- Form your beef into patties that are about 1/2 inch thick, making sure to create an indentation in the center of each patty to prevent it from puffing up while it cooks.
- If you want to take your grilled onion cheddar burgers to the next level, try experimenting with some extra toppings. You could add some bacon, avocado, or even a fried egg on top. The possibilities are endless!
- Enjoy it with as many condiments as you like such as BBQ sauce, ketchup, or mayo!
STORAGE
To store your leftover burgers, simply wrap them in foil or plastic wrap and refrigerate them. They’ll stay fresh for up to three days, and you can reheat them in the microwave or on the grill when you’re ready to eat them.
